AFTER-THE-MONSOON NATIVE PLANT WALK AND FEAST IN THE IRONWOOD FOREST

SATURDAY, AUGUST 12, 2000, 6:30 am to noon

Join us for a native plant walk in the Tucson Mountains weaving history,
culture and traditions of desert edibles and medicinals, as well as
hands-on experience and discussion in their preparation. You will become
more familiar with the bounty and potential of the Sonoran Desert (which
contains over 375 known food plants), and the mutual relationships that
result in unexpected abundance.

We'll start the day with an enjoyable plant walk to help you identify
native plants of multiple uses and show you how the plants can be used
(for food, medicine, fiber, attracting wildlife, dyes, landscaping,
nitrogen-fixing, etc.)  After the walk we will all move to cooler
shelter to help prepare some mouth-watering dishes using native foods,
THEN WE WILL FEAST.  A diverse selection of native foods and delights,
prepared by amazingly innovative chef Barbara Rose and you the
participant, will be hungrily sampled to top off the class.  Palo verde
toothpicks will be on hand
for those in need.

Desert Ironwood, Blue and Foothills Palo Verdes, Velvet Mesquite,
Creosote, Mormon Tea, Canyon Hackberry, Desert Hackberry, Saguaro,
Prickly Pear, Hedgehog cactus, various Chollas, Pincushion cactus,
Barrel cactus,
Nopalitos, Passion Vine, Chuparosa, Desert Honeysuckle, Chiltepine,
Agave, Yucca, Oak, Portulaca, Amaranth, Lamb's Quarters, Hierba de
Venado, and much more!

Location to meet- PARK AND CARPOOL TO THE SITE FROM THE NORTHWEST CORNER
OF THE FRY'S PARKING LOT AT CORTARO AND SILVERBELL ROADS.  Meet in the
Fry's parking lot by 6:15 AM - PLEASE DO NOT BE LATE (we will not be
able to wait for you).

Wear walking shoes (not sandals) and hats.  Be prepared to be outdoors
for the majority of the workshop, and bring a full water bottle.

Instructors: Barbara Rose and Brad Lancaster.  Both Barbara and Brad are
long-time residents of the Sonoran desert and expert permaculture
instructors and designers.  They share insatiable hunger for working
with native plants in multiple ways and sharing their knowledge.  In
addition, Barbara is an incredible cook who uses the desert outside her
door as her pantry, while Brad is a primitive skills enthusiast who
loves to look to the wilderness to meet his needs.
