Living Craft Project announces natural building and permaculture
apprenticeship
at Quail Springs Learning Oasis and Permaculture Farm
in Southern California (July-October, 2009)
Out of our deep love for clay, straw, sand, and wood, and because of our
belief that shelter is both a basic human right and a noble art, Living
Craft Project has been born. Living Craft Project is a school of natural
building and authentic living, nestled within Quail Springs. We are
committed to gentle teaching and quality craftsmanship.
In 2009 we would like to invite four spirited apprentices to live in our
community and take on a rigorous and heartfelt training in building. The
apprenticeship will consist of four project-based days of instruction per
week, a day of classroom and research time, and two days for community
involvement or personal time. The construction project will be a 422 square
foot home, with a rubble trench foundation, hollow infill compressed earth
block plinth, load-bearing strawbale walls, load-bearing straw clay walls,
cob detailing, earthen floors, and earthen plasters and paints. Discussions
include roof design, passive solar design, and alternative systems for
water, energy, and waste. The apprenticeship also includes a two week
Permaculture design certification course (taught by Rosemary Morrow and
Robyn Francis) to develop your skills regarding the broader context for
building alternatively and living sustainably.
This apprenticeship if for a dedicated few who want to gain the hand skills
necessary to build safely and healthily. Each apprentice will also have the
opportunity to be a part of the family here at Quail Springs, with access to
workshops, events, and feasts of all kinds.
Cost: $6000 (including the Permaculture Design Course)
$5000 (not including the Permaculture Design Course)
Dates: July 10-October 10
